Over 200 traders will benefit from the upcoming modern Market at Mzee Wanyama on the border of Nakuru East and Gilgil Sub counties.
This was revealed on Tuesday May 14, 2024 during the ground breaking ceremony graced by Governor Susan Kihika in the company of MPs David Gikaria (Nakuru Town East) and Martha Wangari (Gilgil).
The project is a collaboration between the National and County Government that aims to bolster the county’s economic growth by supporting small-scale traders in alignment with the Micro Small and Medium Enterprise economy pillar.
According to Governor Kihika, the project is scheduled for completion within the next four months.
The modern market will accommodate over 200 traders, including facilities such as babycare services (creche), cold room facilities, administration office, open spaces, food court, an ICT hub, accommodation offices, a Sacco office & ATM lobby, banking and a revenue centre, a social hall, Ablution blocks with showers, security lighting and garbage skips.
“I am impressed by the modern market’s design. The stalls will be shared fairly,” she said.
Kihika called on traders to come together and form co-operatives so that they can benefit from the country’s revolving fund.
The Governor also announced that these social amenities will alleviate congestion in the Nakuru CBD and promote organized development and expansion of county businesses.
“We will come up with a master plan for the utilization of the 15 acres where the market stands to incorporate more amenities like a school, health center, police post and a football pitch,” she said.
The event was also graced by County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara, Deputy Governor David Kones, Trade CEC Stephen Kuria and MCAs Antony Kanyere (Nakuru East), Michael Gathanwa (Eburru Mbaruk), David Waithia (Shaabab), Dorcass Gathere (Nominated), Neto Sakwa (Kivumbuni), David Muna (Flamingo), and Degeulle Naburuki (Soin).
A similar modern market shall also be set up in Kasarani in Malewa West, Gilgil Sub-County.
Speaking in Gilgil on Tuesday May 14, 2024 during the ground breaking, Governor Kihika said although markets are a devolved function, the county is collaborating closely with President William Ruto to ensure that traders have the necessary support.
Meanwhile, the County Government will put up a Technical and Vocational Education and Training center in the Ward so that the Youth of Malewa West get the technical skills for that job market.
“We will also be addressing issues such as land grabbing of public corridors along Lake Naivasha, hindering access to the lake. Efforts are underway to revert all such land back to the public. We are also currently processing title deeds for Kasarani residents,” stated Kihika.
She was accompanied by MCAs Francis Mungai (Malewa West), Michael Gathanwa (Eburru Mbaruk), Alegua (Lakeview), and Peter Njoroge (Murindat).
