Wednesday July 17, 2024 and Nakuru CBD came to standstill as Journalists took to the streets in peaceful protests demanding justice for their colleague who was shot while on assigned duty covering Generation Z-led peaceful demonstrations.

Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki- a Kameme TV reporter based in Nakuru was shot by anti-riot Police while covering the generation Z-led peaceful demonstrations in Nakuru on Tuesday July 16 within Nakuru CBD.
Wanjeri was shot thrice on her thighs despite having a Press branded jacket.
An incident that has raised several questions on how Police are handling the ongoing anti Government protests.
Nakuru Journalists are now demanding justice for Wanjeri Kariuki.

Under their umbrella Nakuru Journalists Association, they have presented a petition to Nakuru County Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi demanding that action be taken against the officer who shot Wanjeri Kariuki.
The Nakuru Journalists have also called on police to ensure safety of Journalists.

Association’s Chairperson Joseph Openda said they will not relent until justice is served.
“We are demanding that action be taken against the officer who went ahead to shoot our colleague. We are just messengers and officers should respect the work we do,” stated Openda.
Sentiments echoed by Nakuru Regional Media Council of Kenya Coordinator Mr.Joseph Mecha.
He called on security agencies to have respect for the work that Journalists do and stop harming them
“Journalists operate within a legal framework and therefore they should not in any way be targeted,” he said.
Lawyer Bernhard Kipkoech Ng’etich also weighing in on the matter, condemned police for using excessive force on unharmed Journalists.
He pointed out that freedom of the media should be upheld at all times.
Sentiments echoed by Nakuru-based Human Rights Defender David Kuria.
The called for speedy investigations into the case and ensure the culprits are taken to court.
Wanjeri is recuperating at a Nakuru health facility after she underwent surgery for the removal of the bullets.
