Nakuru County enters into an MoU with Kingdom of Netherlands towards water resilience, sustainability

The County Government of Nakuru has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with the Kingdom of Netherlands.

The MoU was witnessed by Governor Susan Kihika, and it aims at committing the County Government of Nakuru to the Water as leverage program.

It will result in ensuring that Nakuru County and Nakuru City are water resilient and sustainable entities.

Speaking during the signing on September 18, 2027, Governor Kihika reiterated her commitment towards ensuring better livelihood of the people of Nakuru.

Water and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary Eric Muuga and Netherlands Ambassador to Kenya Henk Jan Bakker inked their signatures to the MoU.

The move makes Nakuru the first city in Kenya and Africa to adopt the Sponge City concept under the WaL program.

Sponge City is an innovative initiative which transforms cities into resilient, water-secure and environmentally sustainable urban centres.

They sustainably absorb, store and filter flood waters as well as supply water efficiently during the dry season.

Through the program, which is a powerful demonstration of the convergence of governments, private sector, civic organizations and communities, Nakuru City and Nakuru County will see significant improvements in water quality, a reliable water supply system, reduced flooding and enhanced urban resilience.

“I am delighted that together we are finding innovative solutions to water challenges– a key pillar in my manifesto– as we strive to create a water resilience city and county that other counties in Kenya will learn from,” stated Kihika.

The event was graced by Water and Sanitation Principal Secretary, Mr Julius Korir, Water Secretary Eng Samuel Alima Mr Myrko Weber (Vei), Ms Sandra School (RVO), Nakuru County Government officials, Ministry of Water officials and Nakuru Water Service Providers teams.
