The group led by Executive Officer Ms Madelena Mkirema and Chairperson Peter Otieno were in the schools to give hope to the learners with special needs.

During the visit, they donated diapers, washing detergents as well as tissue papers- a Donation that was made possible through Safaricom Foundation via Disability Beyond Understanding.

According to Mkirema, this is the only way to ensure the learners with special needs also enjoy their time in school.

“We applied for a grant from Safaricom Foundation and that is what has enabled this donation. We want to put a smile on the faces of these learners with special needs,” she stated.
Sentiments echoed by Peter Otieno who called on society to embrace those living with disability challenges.
Otieno noted that most of these learners have continued to do well in their studies and should be supported.
“Gone are the days when PWDs used to be hidden in houses. We need to arise and support our learners with special needs,” he said.
On her part Ngala Primary Special School Deputy Headteacher Ms Mary Burugu lauded Disability Beyond Understanding organization for the gesture.
According to her, very few have shown such gesture to the learners with special needs.
She called on other well wishers to step in and ensure that such learners are embraced.
“As a school, we are very grateful for the gesture. We should all embrace these learners with special needs so that we can make a better society,” she stated.
Similar sentiments echoed by Pangani Special School Senior Headteacher Ms Gloria Mutahi and Elena Kariuki(In charge of guiding and counseling).
They noted that Pangani Special School is in need of games equipment to help nurture talents.
“Whatever little support we get we shall appreciate,” they stated.
Ms Elena Kariuki added that parents with special needs students should be embraced rather than being seen as a burden.
According to her, the bead making work by special needs learners should be supported.
She added that feeding program in the school really helps the learners as majority come from humble backgrounds.
“The perception on how we view the special needs learners should be re-looked at,” she said.
On his part Shadrack Odero the Principal Njoro Salvation Army Special School lauded the work being carried out by Disability Beyond Understanding organization.
He noted that with such donation, then the learners with special needs can stay in school comfortably.
