Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika has lauded Kenya Defense Forces for their response to families affected by the Mai Mahiu floods tragedy.
Speaking when she joined Commander of Defense Forces Major General Charles Kahariri who visited the site to assess the situation, Governor Kihika noted that KDF have been of great help during the times of the tragedy.
“I express my profound gratitude to the Kenya Defense Force personnel and all stakeholders for their prompt and efficient response to the Maai Mahiu flash floods tragedy throughout the five-day operation,” she stated.
General Kahariri visited to oversee the ongoing recovery operations at the site.
According to Kihika, Currently efforts are underway to relocate survivors from Ngeya Girls Secondary School to a rescue center in Maai Mahiu and other families to rental houses.
The County shall be helping with the rent for the next 3 months as more permanent plans are being worked on.
During the meeting, a brief was issued about the potential high-risk gullies, filled with rainwater along the Meter Gauge Railway at the Kiambu-Nakuru border, posing a threat to downstream residents.
“With the ongoing downpour, I emphasize the urgent need for residents to be moved from these risky areas,” said Kihika.
